Bliss Industries Intros Green Packaging Method
June 1, 2009 | SMT Magazine Archive

MILPITAS, CA — Bliss Industries Inc. will implement a more environmentally friendly packaging method on all future cart shipments. Carts and handling systems will arrive fully assembled, with a reduced amount of packing materials.

Mo Jamal, VP and COO, and David Lopez, shop supervisor, collaborated to devise the method of shipping fully assembled and fully protected product in reduced packaging materials, while preventing freight damage. Jamal and Lopez tried various methods of wrapping Bliss carts in cardboard sheets, reinforced sheets, and cardboard corners. They tracked shipments of each type to see if freight damage increased. During the test period, simply wrapping the carts with stretch wrap and cardboard corners with tops and bottoms showed the same results as normal freight damage: less than 5%.

Bliss has reduced the amount of packaging materials shipped with its products by 75%, as part of a company-wide initiative to reduce costs and waste in operations. The new method has reduced Bliss' labor costs to package its products, and dramatically reduced its packaging costs per cart. This savings, once fully implemented, will be passed on to Bliss customers through price reductions.

This packaging process is now being fully implemented on all appropriate palletized carts.
